CHS Chapel

So I led chapel today for the school that is attached to our church. It was praise and worship chapel for the middle and high school group. You woulda thought we were at a funeral. I had noticed in previous chapels that every song was sung very slow. So as an attempt to pick things up, I thought I would take it upon myself to start off every song fairly quick. Boy, did I look like the fool. How do you snap them out of it? This is an exciting and upbeat time for us to worship God!!! DAYS OF ELIJAH IS A FAST SONG!!! which brings me to a question, did David really rebuild the temple of praise? or was it Solomon?

Anyway, I know that worshiping God isnt about what the singing sounds like, but i just feel that if we sing every song as slow as possible, then worshipping God to these kids is a very solem occasion. How do you get them excited about it?

that's sad to hear.... times like that seem to wear me out, and worshiping should be about building up... i don't have any good suggestions for ya, sorry... just wanted to comment. This probably sounds extremely "churchy", but praying about it is always a good idea. When God opens hearts, amazing things happen - and not just in the way the teen worships... I hope you have an awesome weekend. This is my last weekend before classes start, so i will definitely be taking advantage of it....

Welcome to my world! I've seen these kids excited but they do sing everything slow! I think somewhere they've been taught this way. I think the more we do it the faster they will get.

I had a similar experience last Wednesday night. I totally bombed in leading the praise time before our video series started. These were K-5th graders who were hyper moments before...then they sunk into a slow, monotonous not-so-groovy groove. Boo! No suggestions, but I feel your pain. Also, happy late birthday!

Hey Karessa, I know this post is a little old, but I thought I'd comment on it anyway. I've got news for you, it's not just the kids that have this problem. Grown ups have the exact same problem. They sing slow, which is ok, I guess, but the part that really bugs me is the lack of emotion. We sing songs about praising God, and about the angels praising God, and songs called “Sing and Be Happy”, and “Great are you, Lord”, and some people are totally unemotional and uninvolved. Luckily God loves them just as much as he loves people that are involved and earnestly praising him, but I think it’s sad that some people continue miss the message of the songs we sing. It’s nice to sneak into a community church now and then (I like to go on Saturday evening services sometimes) to participate in their praise and worship times. The C of C could definitely take some lessons from some other churches on how to encourage people to have authentic, meaningful encounters with our Maker. To me, I think if we are truly transporting our hearts to the Almighty I Am, Jehovah God’s throne room, we might want to exhibit some emotion (and maybe even feel excited!). Our comfort zone, though, is sometimes hard to get out of. Keep working on those kids…what you teach and show them now will expand their comfort zone, and maybe one day they will be able to worship the Breather of Life uninhibitedly.
